Typing Chinese: Pinyin, Zhuyin and the shape-based methods

Chinese is typed through an intermediate system, because no keyboard can hold the characters. Pinyin, the dominant method, takes the romanised sound and offers you the characters that share it. Zhuyin does the same with its own symbols. Wubi and Cangjie take the shape of the character instead, and have no homophones to disambiguate.

There is no keyboard, and there could not be

Chinese is written in characters that number in the tens of thousands, with a few thousand in everyday use. A keyboard with a key for each is not an engineering problem anybody failed to solve. It is not a keyboard.

So every method of typing Chinese is an intermediate system: you type something a keyboard can express, and software turns it into characters. The interesting question is which intermediate system, and the answers divide along one line — whether you describe the character by its sound or by its shape.

That division decides everything downstream: how long the method takes to learn, whether you need a new keyboard, and whether typing involves choosing from a list.

Shuangpin is a fifth, and a variation rather than a departure: it compresses Pinyin so that any syllable takes exactly two keys. It has the same homophone problem and the same candidate list.

Pinyin, and the homophone problem

Pinyin input is overwhelmingly dominant on the mainland, and its appeal is obvious: it requires no new keyboard, no new symbols, and nothing a mainland-educated speaker has not already learned in school. You type the sound in Latin letters and pick the character you meant.

Its weakness is built into the language rather than into the method. Mandarin has a small number of possible syllables and a very large number of characters, so a single syllable can be shared by dozens of them. Typing one syllable at a time means reading a list of candidates almost every time.

What makes it workable in practice is that you rarely type one syllable. Enter a whole phrase and the software uses context to pick, which is why modern Pinyin input feels fast: the prediction is doing most of the disambiguation and you are confirming rather than choosing. Speed therefore depends heavily on the software and on how well it has learned you.

It also means a Chinese typing speed measures something different from an English one. Part of it is your hands and part of it is how quickly you read and reject candidates, and no amount of finger drilling improves the second part.

Zhuyin, and why Taiwan does it differently

Zhuyin — also called Bopomofo, after its first four symbols — is the standard in Taiwan. It is phonetic in the same way Pinyin is, but it uses a set of 37 symbols of its own rather than Latin letters, arranged across the keyboard.

The trade is straightforward. Zhuyin needs a layout you do not already have and symbols you may not already know, and in exchange it represents Mandarin sounds directly rather than through a romanisation with its own spelling conventions. A learner who grew up with Zhuyin finds Pinyin's q, x and zh arbitrary; a learner who grew up with Pinyin finds Zhuyin's symbols an extra alphabet.

Neither is better. They are the same idea implemented in two places, and which one you learn is decided by where you are and what you were taught.

Wubi, Cangjie and typing by shape

The shape-based methods take the other road entirely. Instead of describing how a character sounds, you describe how it looks: decompose it into components or strokes and type those, with each key standing for a group of shapes.

The payoff is that shape is almost unique. Two characters that sound identical rarely look identical, so the candidate list mostly disappears and typing becomes deterministic — you press the keys and the character appears. Experienced users are very fast, and the speed is in the hands rather than in the eyes.

The cost is the learning. You are memorising a decomposition scheme for thousands of characters, which takes months rather than days and gives you nothing if you stop. That is why these methods survive among professional typists and transcriptionists and almost nowhere else — the people for whom the months pay back.

It is a familiar shape of trade. The efficient method needs a large up-front investment and the convenient one is already on every machine, which is the same argument this site makes about Dvorak, about Sebeolsik, and about phonetic layouts in general.

What a typing tutor can and cannot do here

Worth saying plainly. The part of Chinese typing that responds to drilling is the part that touches the keyboard: for Pinyin, that is ordinary Latin-letter typing, and every bit of touch-typing skill transfers to it intact.

The part that does not respond to drilling is the choosing. That improves by reading Chinese and by using one input method long enough for its prediction to learn you — neither of which is a typing exercise, and neither of which this site can honestly claim to teach.

So the useful framing is that touch typing is a prerequisite rather than the whole skill. Get the Latin keys automatic and the input method stops competing with your fingers for attention, which is a real improvement and a smaller claim than the one most typing sites would make.

Questions

Is there a Chinese keyboard?

Not in the sense of a key per character — there are thousands of characters. Chinese is typed through an input method on an ordinary keyboard: you type a sound or a shape and the software produces the character. Zhuyin is the one method that uses a layout of its own.

What is the difference between Pinyin and Zhuyin?

What you type the sound with. Pinyin uses Latin letters and needs no new keyboard, which is why it dominates on the mainland. Zhuyin uses 37 symbols of its own on their own layout and is the standard in Taiwan. Both then offer you characters to choose from.

Why is Wubi supposed to be faster?

Because it describes a character's shape rather than its sound, and shapes are nearly unique. That removes the candidate list almost entirely, so typing becomes deterministic. The cost is memorising a decomposition scheme for thousands of characters, which takes months.

Does touch typing help with Chinese?

For Pinyin and the shape-based methods, yes — they are typed on ordinary Latin keys and everything transfers. It does not help with choosing among candidates, which is reading rather than typing and improves with the language rather than with the keyboard.

Why is my Chinese WPM not comparable to my English one?

Because the two numbers measure different mixtures. A Chinese figure includes reading and rejecting candidates; an English figure is your hands alone. Track your Chinese speed against your own over time and treat cross-language comparisons as meaningless.
