Does your keyboard matter?
Less than the people selling keyboards suggest, and more than nothing. Switch type has no reliable effect on the speed of a trained typist; it changes comfort over hours and feedback while learning. What does matter is consistent key positions, standard spacing, a board that does not flex, and where the keyboard sits relative to your hands.
The honest short answer
Technique dominates. Somebody with automatic finger assignments and a low error rate will type quickly on a cheap office keyboard, and somebody without them will not type quickly on anything. That is the part worth saying first, because the amount written about keyboards implies the reverse.
Three hardware properties do genuinely matter, and none of them is the one that gets discussed.
The first is what the keyboard can produce — the layout selected in your operating system, which is a setting rather than a purchase, and which decides whether the letters you need exist at all. The second is that key positions are consistent and standard, so the map your hands are building stays true. The third is where the thing sits, because posture is decided by the height and angle of the surface far more than by the keyboard on it.
Mechanical, membrane, scissor: what actually differs
These describe how a key registers a press, and the differences are real. What is not established is that any of them makes a trained typist faster.
What they do change is how typing feels over a long session, and how much information you get back from each press — which matters most while you are learning, when you are still working out whether a key went down at all.

The things that do matter
Shorter than the list of things that do not.
- Consistent, standard key positions
- You are building a map. A board that moves the backslash, shrinks the right shift or squeezes the arrows into the bottom row makes that map wrong on every other keyboard you touch. Full-size and tenkeyless layouts are both standard; the compact ones are where positions start moving.
- Standard key spacing
- Nearly every full-size keyboard uses the same pitch between key centres. Boards that narrow it to save space are the ones that feel subtly wrong and transfer badly, and small travel keyboards are where you meet them.
- A board that does not flex
- If the case bends under a firm press, the feedback changes depending on where you press, which is exactly the inconsistency automatic motion is built on the absence of.
- Height and angle of the surface
- The single largest hardware influence on comfort, and it is about the desk rather than the keyboard. Forearms roughly level, wrists not bent up to reach the keys. The keyboard's own feet usually make this worse rather than better.
- Whether you can reach it without leaning
- A keyboard pushed back behind a laptop or shoved to one side changes your whole posture. The cheapest ergonomic improvement available is moving it.
Laptop keyboards
You can touch type perfectly well on a laptop, and millions of people do. Two things about them are genuinely worse, and only one is about the keyboard.
The keyboard problem is travel and crowding: very short key travel gives little feedback, and the modifier and arrow keys are usually squeezed, so the positions you learn there are not quite the positions elsewhere. Neither is fatal. Touch typing transfers between a laptop and a desktop board with a few minutes of adjustment, which is the best evidence that the map rather than the mechanism is what you have learned.
The real problem is geometry. A laptop puts the screen and the keyboard at a fixed distance apart, so setting the keyboard at a comfortable height puts the screen too low, and raising the screen puts the keyboard too high. Every hour you spend typing on a laptop is an hour of that compromise. An external keyboard with the laptop raised to eye level solves it for the price of the cheapest item on this page.
Split, tented and ortholinear boards
The alternatives to a normal keyboard shape are worth a straight answer, because they are discussed with a confidence the evidence does not support.
A split keyboard lets each hand sit at shoulder width with the wrists straight, rather than angled inward. Tenting raises the inner edges so the forearms are not fully rotated flat. Both address real postures, and people who have found ordinary keyboards uncomfortable often report relief. Whether they prevent injury is a much stronger claim than anyone can currently support, and it is made constantly.
Ortholinear boards put the keys in a straight grid instead of the staggered rows inherited from typewriter mechanics. The staggering is genuinely an accident of history. That does not mean the grid is better for you: it means relearning the map you already have, for a benefit that is theoretical.
The practical rule is the one that applies to layouts too. If your hands hurt, changing the shape is worth trying, and sooner rather than later. If they do not, you are spending weeks of rebuilt muscle memory on a promise nobody has demonstrated.

Do mechanical keyboards make you type faster?
There is no good evidence that they do for a typist who already has automatic finger assignments. They give clearer feedback, which helps while you are learning, and they stay consistent over years where membrane domes soften. Comfort and durability are honest reasons to buy one. Speed is not.
Is a laptop keyboard bad for touch typing?
No. The travel is short and the modifiers are crowded, but the skill transfers in minutes. The real problem with a laptop is that the screen and keyboard are fixed together, so one of them is always at the wrong height. An external keyboard and a raised laptop fixes the posture, not the typing.
Are split or ergonomic keyboards worth it?
Worth trying if typing is uncomfortable, and worth trying early rather than after months of discomfort. They let the wrists sit straight, which is a real postural difference. The claim that they prevent injury is far stronger than anything that has been demonstrated, and it is made constantly.
Do I need a keyboard with my language's letters printed on it?
No. The layout is a setting in your operating system, and a touch typist does not read the keycaps — printed letters mostly extend the period during which you look down. Does key spacing matter?
More than switch type does. Nearly every full-size board uses the same distance between key centres, and the ones that narrow it to save space feel subtly wrong and transfer badly. If a keyboard is unusually small, check the spacing before anything else about it.
