WPM, CPM and KPH
A typing "word" is five characters including spaces. So CPM is WPM times five, and KPH — keystrokes per hour, the unit data-entry roles use — is WPM times 300. Net WPM is your gross speed with uncorrected errors deducted, and it is the figure worth tracking.
What a WPM number actually counts
A "word" in words per minute is not a word. It is five characters, spaces included, and it has been five characters since typing tests were run on typewriters by people with stopwatches. "Elephant" and "the cat" are both a little under two words by this measure, which sounds absurd until you consider the alternative: a test scored in real words would rate you faster for typing a page of "a a a a a" than a page of prose.
The fixed-width convention is also what lets a Finnish result mean the same thing as an English one. Finnish words are long, Vietnamese words are short, and a real-word count would make the two incomparable. Five characters is arbitrary; being arbitrary in the same way for everyone is the entire point.
Two numbers come out of it. Gross WPM is everything you typed divided by five, over the minutes elapsed. Net WPM subtracts the mistakes you left standing. Net is the one worth watching, because it is the only one that corresponds to work you would not have to do again.

How is net WPM calculated?
Gross WPM is simply everything you typed, divided by five, divided by the minutes it took. Net WPM subtracts the errors you left uncorrected — the usual formula deducts one word per uncorrected error, then divides by the time.
The distinction matters more than it sounds. Two typists with the same gross speed and different accuracy are not equally fast in any sense that affects real work, because one of them has a document to fix afterwards. Net WPM is the closest a test gets to measuring output rather than motion.
It also explains a result that surprises people: slowing down often raises net WPM immediately. The gross number falls, the error count falls faster, and the subtraction does the rest.

What is KPH, and why do job adverts use it?
Keystrokes per hour is the unit of the data-entry and transcription world, and it exists mostly because those roles are measured over hours rather than minutes. It is the same measurement wearing different clothes: KPH is CPM times 60, which makes it WPM times 300.
The practical consequence is that KPH requirements sound far more intimidating than they are. A posting asking for 8,000 KPH is asking for about 27 WPM. One asking for 12,000 is asking for 40. It is worth doing the division before deciding you are unqualified.
Some roles specify "alphanumeric KPH" separately from numeric-only, and that distinction is real: the number row is a genuinely different skill, and speed on it is usually much lower than speed on letters.
Does WPM mean the same thing in every language?
The unit does, deliberately. Because a word is defined as five characters rather than as an actual word, a German result and an Indonesian result are measuring the same amount of typed text, even though German words are much longer.
What is not comparable is the difficulty. A script typed through an input method — Chinese, Japanese, Korean — produces a WPM figure that is measuring something quite different, because the keystrokes and the output are not in a fixed relationship. A script with combining marks, such as Devanagari or Thai, takes more keystrokes than its visible length suggests, so the WPM understates the work.
Compare yourself to yourself over time, and compare across languages only loosely. A leaderboard that ranked every language in one table would be measuring the script as much as the typist, which is why the boards here are kept per language and per test length.
