Testing your Odia typing speed
Odia is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
The thing that surprises people about Odia is the arithmetic. A word that looks like 2 units on screen took more keystrokes than that, because Odia vowel signs and conjunct forms are typed as separate presses and then rendered together. Accuracy matters more than usual here: an error inside a cluster is not always visible at a glance.
Two modes, timed and word-count, plus the option to paste your own text. The words come at random from 22 common Odia words. What you get back is not just a number: net and raw WPM, accuracy, consistency across the run, and the keys you got wrong most often.
Frequency beats duration in Odia by a wider margin than in most languages, because what you are building is a composing order and composing orders decay quickly between sessions. Ten minutes daily will take you further than an hour on Sunday.
The distribution is lopsided, which is the useful part. Across the 22 practice words, 32 distinct characters appear — and the single most common accounts for about 13% of every letter typed, with the top ten covering roughly 59%. A short bank. Odia has 22 practice words here, which is few enough that a long run will repeat them. That is a gap rather than a decision: adding words to a tool whose whole purpose is that people practise typing them needs certainty about Odia spelling, and a bank with a misspelling in it teaches the misspelling. Corrections are genuinely welcome.

Odia is written in a script distinguished by the curved line running across the top of most letters — an adaptation, as with Sinhala's rounded forms, generally attributed to writing on palm leaves, where straight horizontal strokes risked tearing along the grain.
Odia was recognised as a classical language of India in 2014, the sixth to be so designated, on the basis of a literary tradition going back more than a thousand years.
Typing uses the InScript layout, the same pan-Indic standard that serves Hindi, Bengali, Telugu and most of the rest — one of its genuine successes is that learning the arrangement once makes those scripts mechanically familiar. Tamil is the exception, on its own Tamil 99 standard, and so is Sinhala.

Is Odia hard to type?
Harder than a one-key-one-letter language, and for a specific reason rather than a vague one: marks combine, so a written unit takes several presses in a fixed order. The bank here averages 2 units per word with a fairly compact inventory of 32 characters across the practice bank. The keystroke count is higher than the visible length suggests, which is what makes early progress feel slower than it is.
Why does my score change so much between attempts?
Partly the draw and partly you. No two runs of the Odia typing test use the same words — they are sampled fresh from the bank each time, so one attempt can hand you a friendlier set than the next — and concentration varies more than most people credit. Take three and look at the middle one rather than the best.
How is typing speed measured here?
In words per minute, where a "word" is a fixed five characters rather than an actual word. That convention is what makes a WPM figure comparable between languages whose real words are very different lengths. The number reported is net WPM: uncorrected mistakes are subtracted, so it reflects text you actually produced correctly.
Why is my Odia speed lower than my English speed?
Because you are doing two things at once: finding the key and recalling what it writes. Speed in a script you have typed for years is one motion; speed in a new one is a lookup followed by a motion. The lookup is what disappears with practice, and when it does the gap closes faster than most people expect.
