Testing your Gujarati typing speed
Gujarati is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
Typing Gujarati is not a matter of one key, one character. The Gujarati script combines consonants, vowel signs and modifiers into single written clusters, which means you compose a syllable and watch it assemble itself as you go. The speed test and the games draw on one bank of 43 common Gujarati words — 40 distinct characters in all, averaging 2.1 written units per word. Nothing about the test is fixed except the fairness of it: the same bank, sampled fresh, so a result today is comparable with a result next month. Duration, word count, punctuation and digits are all yours to set.
Frequency beats duration in Gujarati by a wider margin than in most languages, because what you are building is a composing order and composing orders decay quickly between sessions. Ten minutes daily will take you further than an hour on Sunday.
Gujarati's 43-word bank draws on 40 characters, and they are wildly unequal in how often they turn up — the commonest is about 9% of all letters typed, the rarest a fraction of one. Gujarati script is closely derived from Devanagari and differs from it most obviously in one respect: it drops the shirorekha, the horizontal line running along the top of Devanagari letters. The letterforms are otherwise recognisably related.
The omission has a practical origin — the script developed for quick handwriting in commercial record-keeping, where not lifting the pen to draw a headline saved time. It is one of the rare cases where a script's appearance is traceable to bookkeeping.

Questions about typing in Gujarati
Does accuracy matter more than speed?
For a score, they are the same measurement — net WPM already penalises errors. For improving, accuracy matters more, because the fastest route to a higher number is almost always removing mistakes rather than moving your fingers faster.
How long should a Gujarati typing test be?
Longer than you would like. A 15-second test measures your sprint and flatters you; over two minutes your sustainable speed shows up, along with the fact that concentration runs out. If you want one number that describes you rather than your best moment, take the longer one.
Why does my score change so much between attempts?
Partly the draw and partly you. No two runs of the Gujarati typing test use the same words — they are sampled fresh from the bank each time, so one attempt can hand you a friendlier set than the next — and concentration varies more than most people credit. Take three and look at the middle one rather than the best.
Do I need a Gujarati keyboard?
