Testing your Malayalam typing speed
Malayalam is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
The speed test and the games draw on one bank of 24 common Malayalam words — 36 distinct characters in all, averaging 2.3 written units per word. A test can run for a fixed duration or a fixed number of words, with punctuation and numbers optional. Words are drawn at random each time, so no two runs are the same and there is nothing to memorise. The result reports net speed, accuracy, how steady you were across the run, and the five keys you got wrong most often.

A short bank. Malayalam has 24 practice words here, which is few enough that a long run will repeat them. That is a gap rather than a decision: adding words to a tool whose whole purpose is that people practise typing them needs certainty about Malayalam spelling, and a bank with a misspelling in it teaches the misspelling. Corrections are genuinely welcome.

Malayalam has one of the larger character inventories among Indic scripts, historically including several hundred ligature forms for consonant clusters.
A 1971 reform introduced a simplified script that reduced the number of distinct shapes — partly to fit the constraints of typewriters and early printing. The traditional forms never disappeared, and modern digital typography has made them practical again, so contemporary Malayalam mixes both and readers handle either.

Do I need a Malayalam keyboard?

What is the difference between raw and net WPM?
Raw counts everything you typed; net subtracts what you got wrong and left wrong. A large gap between the two is the most useful signal on the results screen — it means the speed is there and the accuracy is not, which is a different problem from simply being slow, and a faster one to fix.
Does accuracy matter more than speed?
For a score, they are the same measurement — net WPM already penalises errors. For improving, accuracy matters more, because the fastest route to a higher number is almost always removing mistakes rather than moving your fingers faster.
How long should a Malayalam typing test be?
Longer than you would like. A 15-second test measures your sprint and flatters you; over two minutes your sustainable speed shows up, along with the fact that concentration runs out. If you want one number that describes you rather than your best moment, take the longer one.
