Practising Lao with games
Lao is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
The speed test and the games draw on one bank of 21 common Lao words — 31 distinct characters in all, averaging 2.3 written units per word. A round is short by design, two or three minutes at most, because the value of a game here is attention rather than endurance. The lessons are where the hours go; this is where you find out what has actually stuck.
ລາວ uses 31 distinct Lao characters across the practice bank, and they do not sit in a line — marks go above, below and around the letters they modify. The Lao Niyom layout arranges 28 of them across the keys you already have, and the guide shows the physical key alongside the character it writes.
Frequency beats duration in Lao by a wider margin than in most languages, because what you are building is a composing order and composing orders decay quickly between sessions. Ten minutes daily will take you further than an hour on Sunday.
Worth knowing before you start: these 21 words use 31 distinct characters, and the effort is not spread evenly across them. Ten of them do roughly 55% of the work, so the first week of practice buys far more than the tenth will. That is the normal shape of it, not a sign of a plateau.

A short bank. Lao has 21 practice words here, which is few enough that a long run will repeat them. That is a gap rather than a decision: adding words to a tool whose whole purpose is that people practise typing them needs certainty about Lao spelling, and a bank with a misspelling in it teaches the misspelling. Corrections are genuinely welcome.

Lao and Thai are closely related and their scripts share an origin, but Lao underwent a spelling reform that Thai did not. Lao spelling is largely phonemic — words are written as they sound — while Thai retains etymological spellings from Sanskrit and Pali that no longer match pronunciation.
The practical result for a typist is that Lao has fewer characters to learn: 27 consonants against Thai's 44, because the reform removed the redundant ones. Like Thai, it writes without spaces between words and stacks vowel marks above, below, before and after the consonant.
The Lao Niyom layout is the standard arrangement and, like Thai, uses the number row for letters.

Do I need a Lao keyboard?
No. Printed Lao keycaps are sold and they are not worth it for a touch typist: you are trying to learn a map, and a visible map delays that. Select the Lao Niyom layout in your system settings and use the on-screen guide below instead, which you can turn off once it stops helping.
Are game scores saved?
On this device, always. On the leaderboard, only if you have signed in and chosen a name — and a leaderboard name is never your email address.
Which game should I start with?
Whichever appeals — they pressure different things. Falling words reward finishing what you started; the orbit rewards picking a target and committing; the shrinking timer rewards not hesitating. If you are trying to fix hesitation specifically, the third one is the unpleasant and effective choice.
Do games help, or are they just a break?
Both, honestly. They will not teach you a key you have never drilled, and they are very good at exposing which keys you only think you know — under time pressure the shaky ones fail first. Treat them as a diagnostic and the lessons as the fix.
