Learning to type in Punjabi
Punjabi is written in the Gurmukhi script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
One written unit in Gurmukhi is often two or three keystrokes, and the 44 practice words here average 2.2 written units each — so a word of ordinary length is a good deal more work than its length suggests. That is the figure to hold on to when your Punjabi speed looks low beside your English: the score counts what appears on screen, and your hands pay for what it took to put it there.
A frequency count of the bank explains why early progress feels fast and later progress does not. The top ten characters cover about 51% of everything these Punjabi words contain; past that you are learning characters that turn up once in a paragraph, which takes as long to automate and pays back far less often.
Expect your Punjabi speed to lag your English speed for longer than feels reasonable, and expect the reason to be composition rather than key-finding. Each written unit is several presses in a particular order, and it is the order that becomes automatic last.

Punjabi in India is written in Gurmukhi, the script these lessons teach, which was standardised in the sixteenth century by Guru Angad and is used for Sikh scripture. In Pakistan, Punjabi is written in Shahmukhi, an Arabic-derived script.
The two are not mutually readable, which means the largest language in Pakistan and one of the largest in India share a name, a grammar and very little written text. Conversion tools exist and are imperfect, particularly because Shahmukhi does not mark vowels as fully as Gurmukhi does.
Punjabi is tonal, which is unusual for an Indo-Aryan language. Gurmukhi marks the tones through particular consonant letters rather than with diacritics, so the tone is carried by spelling.
Questions about typing in Punjabi
Do I need a Punjabi keyboard?
No hardware is required — Punjabi InScript ships with every major operating system. What does take getting used to is that a key is not a character here: vowel signs and conjunct forms are separate presses that the renderer assembles, so the order you press in matters more than the position you press.
Can I skip ahead to a later stage?
Yes, nothing is locked. It is usually a mistake, though, because each stage assumes the keys before it have stopped needing thought — and a stage practised on top of a shaky one tends to embed the shakiness rather than fix it.
Why does a drill need three clean passes?
Because one correct attempt proves you can do it and three prove you can repeat it, which is the thing that eventually becomes automatic. Attempts with mistakes in them do not count towards the three — not as a punishment, but because practising an error is how an error becomes a habit. Three is the default rather than a rule: Settings will take it down to one or up to ten.
Do I need to know Punjabi to use these lessons?
No. The material here is typing practice rather than a language course — you can work through it without understanding a word, and plenty of people do exactly that when they need to type a script for work. If you do speak Punjabi, you will simply predict what is coming sooner, and prediction is most of what typing speed is.
