Learning to type in Bengali
Bengali is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
The course is deliberately narrow at the beginning: a handful of keys repeated until they are automatic, before anything is added. Nine stages later it has worked across the board, and 46 common Bengali words are waiting in the speed test for when the positions stop needing thought. Skipping ahead is possible and usually a mistake, because the later stages assume the earlier ones are already automatic.
The thing that surprises people about Bengali is the arithmetic. A word that looks like 2.2 units on screen took more keystrokes than that, because Bengali vowel signs and conjunct forms are typed as separate presses and then rendered together. Accuracy matters more than usual here: an error inside a cluster is not always visible at a glance.
Frequency beats duration in Bengali by a wider margin than in most languages, because what you are building is a composing order and composing orders decay quickly between sessions. Ten minutes daily will take you further than an hour on Sunday.

Bengali is typed on more competing layouts than almost any language here, and which one you meet depends largely on which side of the India-Bangladesh border you are on.
InScript, used in these lessons, is the Indian government standard and works the same way as it does for Hindi — the phonetically equivalent letter in the same position across the scripts that adopted it, which is most of them but not Tamil. In Bangladesh, Bijoy and its Unijoy variant are widely used, as is Probhat, which arranges the script phonetically against Latin key positions.
Avro, a phonetic input method where you type Bengali in Latin letters and it converts, is very widely used in Bangladesh and is how a great many people type Bengali in practice — the same relationship transliteration tools have to keyboards in several other Indic languages.
Bengali also writes ligature clusters extensively: two or three consonants combine into a single glyph whose shape may not obviously derive from its parts, which makes reading back what you typed a skill of its own.
Questions about typing in Bengali
Do I need a Bengali keyboard?
No. Printed Bengali keycaps are sold and they are not worth it for a touch typist: you are trying to learn a map, and a visible map delays that. Select the Bengali InScript layout in your system settings and use the on-screen guide below instead, which you can turn off once it stops helping.

Can I skip ahead to a later stage?
Yes, nothing is locked. It is usually a mistake, though, because each stage assumes the keys before it have stopped needing thought — and a stage practised on top of a shaky one tends to embed the shakiness rather than fix it.
Why does a drill need three clean passes?
Because one correct attempt proves you can do it and three prove you can repeat it, which is the thing that eventually becomes automatic. Attempts with mistakes in them do not count towards the three — not as a punishment, but because practising an error is how an error becomes a habit. Three is the default rather than a rule: Settings will take it down to one or up to ten.
Do I need to know Bengali to use these lessons?
No. The material here is typing practice rather than a language course — you can work through it without understanding a word, and plenty of people do exactly that when they need to type a script for work. If you do speak Bengali, you will simply predict what is coming sooner, and prediction is most of what typing speed is.
What will I actually be typing in Bengali?
Sequences of the keys each stage has introduced — single letters first, then pairs, then short chunks — in Bengali as the Bengali InScript layout produces it, rather than transliterated into Latin letters. The point of the course is the position of a key rather than the vocabulary.
