Testing your Bengali typing speed
Bengali is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
বাংলা uses 38 distinct Bengali characters across the practice bank, and they do not sit in a line — marks go above, below and around the letters they modify. The Bengali InScript layout arranges 26 of them across the keys you already have, and the guide shows the physical key alongside the character it writes.
The test is configurable rather than fixed — 15 seconds to 10 minutes, or a set number of words, or your own pasted text. The speed test and the games draw on one bank of 46 common Bengali words — 38 distinct characters in all, averaging 2.2 written units per word. Every run samples it again. The summary separates raw speed from net speed, so you can see exactly what your errors cost you.
Of the 38 characters these 46 words use, one alone accounts for roughly 12%. Frequencies like that are why touch typing can be learned at all — you are not memorising 38 equally important characters, you are automating a handful and filling in the rest over time.
Watch what you have written rather than what you are pressing. In Bengali a cluster only resolves once the last mark is in, so the screen is the only honest feedback on whether the keystroke order was right. Bengali is typed on more competing layouts than almost any language here, and which one you meet depends largely on which side of the India-Bangladesh border you are on.
InScript, used in these lessons, is the Indian government standard and works the same way as it does for Hindi — the phonetically equivalent letter in the same position across the scripts that adopted it, which is most of them but not Tamil. In Bangladesh, Bijoy and its Unijoy variant are widely used, as is Probhat, which arranges the script phonetically against Latin key positions.
Avro, a phonetic input method where you type Bengali in Latin letters and it converts, is very widely used in Bangladesh and is how a great many people type Bengali in practice — the same relationship transliteration tools have to keyboards in several other Indic languages.
Bengali also writes ligature clusters extensively: two or three consonants combine into a single glyph whose shape may not obviously derive from its parts, which makes reading back what you typed a skill of its own.

Is the Bengali typing test the same every time?
No. Words are drawn at random from the Bengali bank on every run, so there is nothing to memorise and a second attempt is a fresh test rather than a rehearsal. You can fix the duration or the word count, turn punctuation and numbers on, or paste your own text.
What is the difference between raw and net WPM?
Raw counts everything you typed; net subtracts what you got wrong and left wrong. A large gap between the two is the most useful signal on the results screen — it means the speed is there and the accuracy is not, which is a different problem from simply being slow, and a faster one to fix.
Does accuracy matter more than speed?
For a score, they are the same measurement — net WPM already penalises errors. For improving, accuracy matters more, because the fastest route to a higher number is almost always removing mistakes rather than moving your fingers faster.
Is Bengali hard to type?
Harder than a one-key-one-letter language, and for a specific reason rather than a vague one: marks combine, so a written unit takes several presses in a fixed order. The bank here averages 2.2 units per word with a fairly compact inventory of 38 characters across the practice bank. The keystroke count is higher than the visible length suggests, which is what makes early progress feel slower than it is.
