Bengali typing games

Make repetition feel lighter. Three short games, all played in Bengali. Every 4 clean hits raises the level, and it never drops back. Scores are kept in this browser; signed in, a new personal best also goes to the leaderboard.

Practising Bengali with games

Bengali is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.

Worth knowing before you start: these 46 words use 38 distinct characters, and the effort is not spread evenly across them. Ten of them do roughly 59% of the work, so the first week of practice buys far more than the tenth will. That is the normal shape of it, not a sign of a plateau.

One written unit in Bengali is often two or three keystrokes, and the 46 practice words here average 2.2 written units each — so a word of ordinary length is a good deal more work than its length suggests. That is the figure to hold on to when your Bengali speed looks low beside your English: the score counts what appears on screen, and your hands pay for what it took to put it there.

Games here are practice with a failure condition, not a different activity: same words as the speed test, same script, same layout. The speed test and the games draw on one bank of 46 common Bengali words — 38 distinct characters in all, averaging 2.2 written units per word. Only the pacing changes, and it changes upward — four clean hits raise the level, and nothing lowers it again.

Expect your Bengali speed to lag your English speed for longer than feels reasonable, and expect the reason to be composition rather than key-finding. Each written unit is several presses in a particular order, and it is the order that becomes automatic last.

Several layouts, and a border between them

Bengali is typed on more competing layouts than almost any language here, and which one you meet depends largely on which side of the India-Bangladesh border you are on.

InScript, used in these lessons, is the Indian government standard and works the same way as it does for Hindi — the phonetically equivalent letter in the same position across the scripts that adopted it, which is most of them but not Tamil. In Bangladesh, Bijoy and its Unijoy variant are widely used, as is Probhat, which arranges the script phonetically against Latin key positions.

Avro, a phonetic input method where you type Bengali in Latin letters and it converts, is very widely used in Bangladesh and is how a great many people type Bengali in practice — the same relationship transliteration tools have to keyboards in several other Indic languages.

Bengali also writes ligature clusters extensively: two or three consonants combine into a single glyph whose shape may not obviously derive from its parts, which makes reading back what you typed a skill of its own.

Questions about typing in Bengali

Do I need a Bengali keyboard?

No hardware is required — Bengali InScript ships with every major operating system. What does take getting used to is that a key is not a character here: vowel signs and conjunct forms are separate presses that the renderer assembles, so the order you press in matters more than the position you press.

Which Bengali keyboard layout do these games use?

Bengali InScript, with 26 characters mapped across the standard key positions. The 46 practice words between them use 38 distinct characters. The keyboard guide below the typing area shows the physical key and the character it produces together, so you are never reading a layout diagram in one window while typing in another.

What will I actually be typing in Bengali?

46 of the most common words in Bengali, drawn at random. They use 38 distinct characters between them and average 2.2 written units each, with the longest running to about 6. Short, frequent words are used on purpose: they are the ones your hands will meet most often outside a lesson, so the practice transfers.

Is Bengali hard to type?

Harder than a one-key-one-letter language, and for a specific reason rather than a vague one: marks combine, so a written unit takes several presses in a fixed order. The bank here averages 2.2 units per word with a fairly compact inventory of 38 characters across the practice bank. The keystroke count is higher than the visible length suggests, which is what makes early progress feel slower than it is.

Are game scores saved?

On this device, always. On the leaderboard, only if you have signed in and chosen a name — and a leaderboard name is never your email address.

Which game should I start with?

Whichever appeals — they pressure different things. Falling words reward finishing what you started; the orbit rewards picking a target and committing; the shrinking timer rewards not hesitating. If you are trying to fix hesitation specifically, the third one is the unpleasant and effective choice.

Do games help, or are they just a break?

Both, honestly. They will not teach you a key you have never drilled, and they are very good at exposing which keys you only think you know — under time pressure the shaky ones fail first. Treat them as a diagnostic and the lessons as the fix.

Do I need an account, and is it free?

Neither. There is no paid tier and no required sign-in — the 46 Bengali practice words, the speed test and all three games are the whole product, available immediately. Signing in is worth it only if you practise on more than one device.
