Practising Kannada with games
Kannada is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
Frequency beats duration in Kannada by a wider margin than in most languages, because what you are building is a composing order and composing orders decay quickly between sessions. Ten minutes daily will take you further than an hour on Sunday.
One written unit in Kannada is often two or three keystrokes, and the 41 practice words here average 2.6 written units each — so a word of ordinary length is a good deal more work than its length suggests. That is the figure to hold on to when your Kannada speed looks low beside your English: the score counts what appears on screen, and your hands pay for what it took to put it there.
The three games differ in what they pressure. One drops words you must finish before they land, one puts characters on a moving orbit, and one hands you a clock that shrinks every time you succeed. All three run on 41 common Kannada words, and all three level up every four clean hits and never level down.
Not all keys are worth the same. Ten characters carry around 56% of everything you will type in these Kannada drills, and the remaining 32 share what is left. That is why the course introduces its material a little at a time rather than all at once: the early characters do a disproportionate amount of the work.

Kannada and Telugu share an ancestor and remained one script into the early modern period, which is why their letterforms are so alike. Kannada's are slightly more angular; the family resemblance is unmistakable.
The script is an abugida with around 49 letters, and consonant clusters are written by attaching a subscript form of the second consonant beneath the first. That stacking makes Kannada text taller than a linear script and means the typing order and the visual order diverge.
Kannada was recognised as a classical language of India in 2008 and has an unbroken literary tradition going back well over a thousand years. Typing uses the InScript layout.

Do I need a Kannada keyboard?
No. Printed Kannada keycaps are sold and they are not worth it for a touch typist: you are trying to learn a map, and a visible map delays that. Select the Kannada InScript layout in your system settings and use the on-screen guide below instead, which you can turn off once it stops helping.

What will I actually be typing in Kannada?
41 of the most common words in Kannada, drawn at random. They use 42 distinct characters between them and average 2.6 written units each, with the longest running to about 7. Short, frequent words are used on purpose: they are the ones your hands will meet most often outside a lesson, so the practice transfers.
Will playing improve my Kannada typing?
It will improve your recall of keys you have already drilled, which is a real and specific benefit. It will not build the finger positions in the first place — pressure is a poor teacher and an excellent examiner. Use the lessons to learn a key and a game to find out whether you actually did.
Do the games use real Kannada words?
Yes — all three draw on the same bank of common Kannada words the speed test samples. Nothing is generated or transliterated for the sake of the game, so a score here means the same thing as a score there.
Do I need to be fast to play?
No. All three start slow and speed up only as you succeed: the level rises every four clean hits and never drops back, so a game meets you where you are and ends when you stop keeping up. What a round tells you is where that point is today, which is a more useful thing to know than a score.
Is Kannada hard to type?
Harder than a one-key-one-letter language, and for a specific reason rather than a vague one: marks combine, so a written unit takes several presses in a fixed order. The bank here averages 2.6 units per word with a fairly compact inventory of 42 characters across the practice bank. The keystroke count is higher than the visible length suggests, which is what makes early progress feel slower than it is.
