Learning to type in Malayalam
Malayalam is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
The thing that surprises people about Malayalam is the arithmetic. A word that looks like 2.3 units on screen took more keystrokes than that, because Malayalam vowel signs and conjunct forms are typed as separate presses and then rendered together. Accuracy matters more than usual here: an error inside a cluster is not always visible at a glance.
Expect your Malayalam speed to lag your English speed for longer than feels reasonable, and expect the reason to be composition rather than key-finding. Each written unit is several presses in a particular order, and it is the order that becomes automatic last.

A short bank. Malayalam has 24 practice words here, which is few enough that a long run will repeat them. That is a gap rather than a decision: adding words to a tool whose whole purpose is that people practise typing them needs certainty about Malayalam spelling, and a bank with a misspelling in it teaches the misspelling. Corrections are genuinely welcome.

Malayalam has one of the larger character inventories among Indic scripts, historically including several hundred ligature forms for consonant clusters.
A 1971 reform introduced a simplified script that reduced the number of distinct shapes — partly to fit the constraints of typewriters and early printing. The traditional forms never disappeared, and modern digital typography has made them practical again, so contemporary Malayalam mixes both and readers handle either.
Typing uses the InScript layout, and Malayalam's habit of forming very long compound words means a Malayalam word count and a Malayalam character count tell quite different stories.
Questions about typing in Malayalam
Why does a drill need three clean passes?
Because one correct attempt proves you can do it and three prove you can repeat it, which is the thing that eventually becomes automatic. Attempts with mistakes in them do not count towards the three — not as a punishment, but because practising an error is how an error becomes a habit. Three is the default rather than a rule: Settings will take it down to one or up to ten.
Do I need to know Malayalam to use these lessons?
No. The material here is typing practice rather than a language course — you can work through it without understanding a word, and plenty of people do exactly that when they need to type a script for work. If you do speak Malayalam, you will simply predict what is coming sooner, and prediction is most of what typing speed is.
Should I look at the keyboard while I learn?
No, and this is the one piece of advice worth being stubborn about. A glance down is not just a pause — it rehearses the habit of reading the keys instead of remembering them, which is precisely the habit the course exists to replace. Covering your hands for the first fortnight is unpleasant and works.
Do I need a Malayalam keyboard?

What does take getting used to is that a key is not a character here: vowel signs and conjunct forms are separate presses that the renderer assembles, so the order you press in matters more than the position you press.
