Testing your Marathi typing speed

Marathi is written in the Devanagari script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.

One written unit in Devanagari is often two or three keystrokes, and the 47 practice words here average 2.1 written units each — so a word of ordinary length is a good deal more work than its length suggests. That is the figure to hold on to when your Marathi speed looks low beside your English: the score counts what appears on screen, and your hands pay for what it took to put it there.

Pick a duration or a word count, turn punctuation and digits on if you want them, and type 47 common Marathi words in whatever order the shuffle produces. Because the words come fresh each run there is nothing to learn by repetition — a second attempt measures you, not your memory. The same layout as Hindi, a different language

Marathi and Hindi are written in the same script and typed on the same InScript layout, so the keyboard skill transfers completely between them. What differs is the vocabulary and one letter: Marathi uses ळ, a retroflex lateral that Hindi does not, and it has its own position on the layout.

Longer than you would like. A 15-second test measures your sprint and flatters you; over two minutes your sustainable speed shows up, along with the fact that concentration runs out. If you want one number that describes you rather than your best moment, take the longer one.

Why does my score change so much between attempts?
