Testing your Nepali typing speed
Nepali is written in the Devanagari script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
One number is worth carrying into the first session. About 60% of the letters in these Nepali words come from just ten characters. Get those ten genuinely automatic — not merely findable — and the rest of the layout stops being the thing standing between you and a readable sentence.
Typing Nepali is not a matter of one key, one character. The Devanagari script combines consonants, vowel signs and modifiers into single written clusters, which means you compose a syllable and watch it assemble itself as you go. The test is configurable rather than fixed — 15 seconds to 10 minutes, or a set number of words, or your own pasted text. Nepali is written in Devanagari and can be typed on InScript, the same phonetic arrangement used for Hindi and Marathi. It is not, however, the layout most Nepali typists learned.
Nepali Traditional — sometimes called the Nepali typewriter layout — descends from mechanical typewriters and arranges characters by how often Nepali uses them rather than by phonetic order. It remains common in Nepal, particularly in government and print, for the same reason QWERTY persists everywhere: an installed base of people who already know it.
The practical consequence is that "learning to type Nepali" is an ambiguous phrase, and it is worth finding out which layout the people around you use before investing weeks in the other one.

No hardware is required — Devanagari InScript ships with every major operating system. What does take getting used to is that a key is not a character here: vowel signs and conjunct forms are separate presses that the renderer assembles, so the order you press in matters more than the position you press.

Longer than you would like. A 15-second test measures your sprint and flatters you; over two minutes your sustainable speed shows up, along with the fact that concentration runs out. If you want one number that describes you rather than your best moment, take the longer one.
Why does my score change so much between attempts?
Partly the draw and partly you. No two runs of the Nepali typing test use the same words — they are sampled fresh from the bank each time, so one attempt can hand you a friendlier set than the next — and concentration varies more than most people credit. Take three and look at the middle one rather than the best.
How is typing speed measured here?
In words per minute, where a "word" is a fixed five characters rather than an actual word. That convention is what makes a WPM figure comparable between languages whose real words are very different lengths. The number reported is net WPM: uncorrected mistakes are subtracted, so it reflects text you actually produced correctly.
Is Nepali hard to type?
