Testing your Tamil typing speed
Tamil is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
தமிழ் uses 29 distinct Tamil characters across the practice bank, and they do not sit in a line — marks go above, below and around the letters they modify. The Tamil 99 layout arranges 28 of them across the keys you already have, and the guide shows the physical key alongside the character it writes.
Expect your Tamil speed to lag your English speed for longer than feels reasonable, and expect the reason to be composition rather than key-finding. Each written unit is several presses in a particular order, and it is the order that becomes automatic last.
Tamil's 42-word bank draws on 29 characters, and they are wildly unequal in how often they turn up — the commonest is about 16% of all letters typed, the rarest a fraction of one. The lessons follow that gradient deliberately, which is why the home row comes first and the awkward reaches come last.
Two modes, timed and word-count, plus the option to paste your own text. The words come at random from 42 common Tamil words. What you get back is not just a number: net and raw WPM, accuracy, consistency across the run, and the keys you got wrong most often.

அமைதியான கைகள் முகப்பு வரிசையை எளிதில் கண்டறிகின்றனTamil 99, and a script with fewer letters than its neighbours
Tamil has a notably compact consonant inventory: 18 consonants, where Sanskrit-derived scripts typically have more than 30. Tamil does not distinguish aspirated from unaspirated or voiced from voiceless in writing — one letter covers what other Indic scripts split into four — and context tells the reader which is meant.
Tamil 99, the layout used here, was designed in 1999 specifically for Tamil rather than adapted from a pan-Indic standard. It places vowels and consonants for the language's own frequency and is the Tamil Nadu government standard.
The alternative is a phonetic or typewriter layout, and Tamil typists are divided along familiar lines. Tamil is also one of the longest continuously written languages in the world, with inscriptions going back more than two thousand years.
Questions about typing in Tamil
Do I need a Tamil keyboard?
No hardware is required — Tamil 99 ships with every major operating system. What does take getting used to is that a key is not a character here: vowel signs and conjunct forms are separate presses that the renderer assembles, so the order you press in matters more than the position you press.
Which Tamil keyboard layout do these tests use?
Tamil 99, with 28 characters mapped across the standard key positions. The 42 practice words between them use 29 distinct characters. The keyboard guide below the typing area shows the physical key and the character it produces together, so you are never reading a layout diagram in one window while typing in another.
What will I actually be typing in Tamil?
42 of the most common words in Tamil, drawn at random. They use 29 distinct characters between them and average 3 written units each, with the longest running to about 7. Short, frequent words are used on purpose: they are the ones your hands will meet most often outside a lesson, so the practice transfers.
Is Tamil hard to type?
Harder than a one-key-one-letter language, and for a specific reason rather than a vague one: marks combine, so a written unit takes several presses in a fixed order. The bank here averages 3 units per word with a fairly compact inventory of 29 characters across the practice bank. The keystroke count is higher than the visible length suggests, which is what makes early progress feel slower than it is.
Does accuracy matter more than speed?
For a score, they are the same measurement — net WPM already penalises errors. For improving, accuracy matters more, because the fastest route to a higher number is almost always removing mistakes rather than moving your fingers faster.
How long should a Tamil typing test be?
Longer than you would like. A 15-second test measures your sprint and flatters you; over two minutes your sustainable speed shows up, along with the fact that concentration runs out. If you want one number that describes you rather than your best moment, take the longer one.
Why does my score change so much between attempts?
Partly the draw and partly you. No two runs of the Tamil typing test use the same words — they are sampled fresh from the bank each time, so one attempt can hand you a friendlier set than the next — and concentration varies more than most people credit. Take three and look at the middle one rather than the best.
Do I need an account, and is it free?
Neither. There is no paid tier and no required sign-in — the 42 Tamil practice words, the speed test and all three games are the whole product, available immediately. Signing in is worth it only if you practise on more than one device.
