Telugu typing speed test

Testing your Telugu typing speed
Telugu is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.
The speed test and the games draw on one bank of 41 common Telugu words — 37 distinct characters in all, averaging 2.3 written units per word. Nothing about the test is fixed except the fairness of it: the same bank, sampled fresh, so a result today is comparable with a result next month. Duration, word count, punctuation and digits are all yours to set.
One written unit in Telugu is often two or three keystrokes, and the 41 practice words here average 2.3 written units each — so a word of ordinary length is a good deal more work than its length suggests. That is the figure to hold on to when your Telugu speed looks low beside your English: the score counts what appears on screen, and your hands pay for what it took to put it there.
Frequency beats duration in Telugu by a wider margin than in most languages, because what you are building is a composing order and composing orders decay quickly between sessions. Ten minutes daily will take you further than an hour on Sunday.
One number is worth carrying into the first session. About 59% of the letters in these Telugu words come from just ten characters. Get those ten genuinely automatic — not merely findable — and the rest of the layout stops being the thing standing between you and a readable sentence.

ప్రశాంతమైన చేతులు హోమ్ వరుసను సులభంగా కనుగొంటాయిThe Italian of the East, and a script full of curves
Telugu is written in a rounded script closely related to Kannada — the two were a single script until around the fifteenth century and remain visually similar enough that readers of one can often puzzle out the other.
It is highly vowel-final: most Telugu words end in a vowel, which gave rise to the nineteenth-century description of it as the Italian of the East. For a typist this means a very regular consonant-vowel alternation, which is easier to build rhythm on than a language with heavy consonant clusters.
Telugu is typed on the InScript layout, and it was recognised as a classical language of India in 2008. Its script includes a distinctive tick mark above many letters, historically a vowel-cancelling sign that became part of the letterform.
Questions about typing in Telugu
How long should a Telugu typing test be?
Longer than you would like. A 15-second test measures your sprint and flatters you; over two minutes your sustainable speed shows up, along with the fact that concentration runs out. If you want one number that describes you rather than your best moment, take the longer one.
Why does my score change so much between attempts?
Partly the draw and partly you. No two runs of the Telugu typing test use the same words — they are sampled fresh from the bank each time, so one attempt can hand you a friendlier set than the next — and concentration varies more than most people credit. Take three and look at the middle one rather than the best.
How is typing speed measured here?
In words per minute, where a "word" is a fixed five characters rather than an actual word. That convention is what makes a WPM figure comparable between languages whose real words are very different lengths. The number reported is net WPM: uncorrected mistakes are subtracted, so it reflects text you actually produced correctly.
Do I need a Telugu keyboard?
No. Printed Telugu keycaps are sold and they are not worth it for a touch typist: you are trying to learn a map, and a visible map delays that. Select the Telugu InScript layout in your system settings and use the on-screen guide below instead, which you can turn off once it stops helping.
Which Telugu keyboard layout do these tests use?
Telugu InScript, with 28 characters mapped across the standard key positions. The 41 practice words between them use 37 distinct characters. The keyboard guide below the typing area shows the physical key and the character it produces together, so you are never reading a layout diagram in one window while typing in another.
What will I actually be typing in Telugu?
41 of the most common words in Telugu, drawn at random. They use 37 distinct characters between them and average 2.3 written units each, with the longest running to about 10. Short, frequent words are used on purpose: they are the ones your hands will meet most often outside a lesson, so the practice transfers.
Is Telugu hard to type?
Harder than a one-key-one-letter language, and for a specific reason rather than a vague one: marks combine, so a written unit takes several presses in a fixed order. The bank here averages 2.3 units per word with a fairly compact inventory of 37 characters across the practice bank. The keystroke count is higher than the visible length suggests, which is what makes early progress feel slower than it is.
Do I need an account, and is it free?
No account, no payment, no trial. Progress is stored in this browser, which is enough until you want it on a second device or on a leaderboard — that is the only thing an account buys, and it is optional.
