Practising Telugu with games

Telugu is written in its own script, whose marks combine with base letters into single written units — so one keystroke is not one character on screen.

Typing Telugu is not a matter of one key, one character. The Telugu script combines consonants, vowel signs and modifiers into single written clusters, which means you compose a syllable and watch it assemble itself as you go. The Telugu InScript layout maps 28 characters across the standard key positions to make that composing order predictable.

The speed test and the games draw on one bank of 41 common Telugu words — 37 distinct characters in all, averaging 2.3 written units per word. A round is short by design, two or three minutes at most, because the value of a game here is attention rather than endurance. The Italian of the East, and a script full of curves

Telugu is written in a rounded script closely related to Kannada — the two were a single script until around the fifteenth century and remain visually similar enough that readers of one can often puzzle out the other.

It is highly vowel-final: most Telugu words end in a vowel, which gave rise to the nineteenth-century description of it as the Italian of the East. For a typist this means a very regular consonant-vowel alternation, which is easier to build rhythm on than a language with heavy consonant clusters.

Telugu is typed on the InScript layout, and it was recognised as a classical language of India in 2008. Its script includes a distinctive tick mark above many letters, historically a vowel-cancelling sign that became part of the letterform.
